In 2013, while conducting research for my PhD thesis, I spent three blissful months touring the Roman ruins of western Turkey. Four years later, I occupied an equally pleasant month in the eastern part of the country. During these trips, I encountered dozens of fascinating places, ranging from famous tourist attractions to isolated ruins a half-day’s hike from the nearest road. Some of my favorites are profiled here.
